One of the truly legendary MTV Unplugged performances. There were so many versions
of this one. The addition of DVDs to the party kind of made the variants get out of control.
Fortunately, I am only focusing on the vinyl, which should keep me relatively sane. We shall
see.
There were four original U.S. vinyl variants: two on white vinyl and two on black. Each color came with two different versions of the labels: one said David Geffen Company and one said Geffen Records, Inc. All four are now expensive. The Geffen Records, Inc. ones seem to be a bit rarer, but the white vinyl David Geffen Company one sells for more than the white Geffen Records, Inc. one. No idea why. The two black vinyl versions are roughly equivalent in value.
The European one (pressed in Germany) also came on black and white vinyl. These had the Geffen logo on the labels minus the words underneath. The white version is worth almost as much as the U.S. white ones, but is a bit more common. The black one is a little cheaper. There were two other black vinyl editions in 1994: France and Brazil. True to form, the French one is quite rare and the Brazilian one is fairly common.
In 1995, we got an Ecuador pressing, which is very rare. 1996 brought the first Japanese pressing, which remained affordable for many years, and is no longer. That one came with a purple obi strip. In 1998, we got a Simply Vinyl re-press in the UK. It is reasonably priced because most people hate the sound of these pressings. In 2001, there was another random European pressing, which is common. All of the above were on black vinyl. There were some bootlegs made of the Simply Vinyl pressing on different colors of vinyl. Those are fakes. Just know that the real one is on black vinyl. There was a black vinyl fake as well, but there are enough real ones on the market at any given time that you shouldn't run into the copy.
After a long break between vinyl pressings, and the release of a preposterous quantity of DVD variants, the first Back to Black UK pressing came out in 2008. It is cheap and easy to find, as those tend to be. Then, we got the ORG pressings in 2009. There were RTI and Pallas pressings of both, and red and black variants of each of those. They're all pretty steep now. I've read there were 4,000 red RTI copies and 1,000 red Pallas copies, but I have no idea where those numbers cane from. Oddly, and unlike the three other major label albums that got the ORG treatment, the RTI ones seem to go for more. I don't have a clue why.
There have been a few more pressings since then. There was a weird French reissue in 2012. I'm not 100% convinced this was a legitimate pressing. I will treat it as such for now, but I need more info. It's rare, but seemingly inexpensive. In 2013, there was another black vinyl 180g U.S. pressing. This one was pressed at Pallas but was not an ORG pressing. In 2015, we got a follow-up Back to Black pressing in Europe, and then additional pressings in 2016 and 2017. All of these are readily available and cheap.
2019 brought the 25th anniversary pressings. There were double LP versions in the U.S. and Europe. In the U.S., there were color vinyl and black vinyl versions. For the color one, the first disc was on purple marble vinyl and the second was on orange marble vinyl. That one is fairly expensive, but easy to find. The black vinyl version is cheap and common. The European version was also on black vinyl. It's slightly more expensive than the U.S. black one, but way cheaper than the U.S. color vinyl. Wrapping things up, there was a Target exclusive pressing on oraque purple vinyl. It's not expensive yet, but it has the feel of one that may appreciate.
