The Twilight Singers

Black Out the Windows/Ladies and Gentlemen, The Twilight Singers

One Little Independent TPLP1594BOX 13xLP box set, released 2023 (UK)

Well, this was a long time coming. In 2023, at long last, we got an exclamation point placed on the end of the story of The Twilight Singers. One Little Independent released this beast of a box set, curated by Greg Dulli and containing all Twilight Singers albums, cut at 45 RPM (with one exception) and pressed on frosty-clear vinyl. If an album only took up three sides cutting in this way, the fourth side was an etched rendition of the Twilight swans. In the cases of Twilight and A Stitch in Time, this was the first time either of those releases had ever been on vinyl. In others (Blackberry Belle and She Loves You), the scarce original pressings had become unmanagably expensive. The set even contained a two-disc compilation called Etcetera, containing some rare tracks, some demos, and some previously unreleased materials. So, all in all, this was a was very cool set to have available. The price tag was vicious. It retailed for £400 and was only available in the UK, so getting it to the States (or anywhere outside the UK) required some belt-tightening elsewhere. There were one or two songs that did not make the cut for this set, which bummed me out, but all told, it was quite an achievement.

Examining the full set, it is not hard to see where your money is going. They also spared no expense on the manufacturing and packaging. Each album in the set came in a white jacket featuring an embossed version of that album's art. Inside that, each record came in its own printed inner sleeve. The box also came with a massive booklet and an embossed card signed by Dulli.

Resale prices have generally held to the original retail price range, but seem to be going up slightly. I have found that the typical trend for sets like this is that the label makes its largest margins from the die hards at release time, and the high-priced sets usually do not hold their initial value. This set followed that patttern through 2024, but then, the price started rising a bit.
