Hepcat Compilations

California Ska-Quake

Moon Records MR031 CD/Cassette, released 1992

Contains the Hepcat track "Ooh Ooh A-Hi Hi"

This earlier Moon Records compilation was the first good collection to give a snapshot of the burgeoning California ska scene. There were several important New York comps on the market by this point, but this was the first good California one. It contained an exclusive Hepcat track (a great one...which eventually became not exclusive to this release, as it ended up as a hidden track at the end of the remastered version of their Out of Nowhere album). The comp also provided an interesting look at early No Doubt. Jump With Joey, Dance Hall Crashers, and Let's Go Bowling all made appearances. It was released on CD and cassette.

SKAuthentic was a solid compilation. The highlight of it has to be the Hepcat track. It is fantastic and fully exclusive to this CD.

Give 'Em the Boot

Hellcat 80402-2 CD, released 1997

Hellcat 0402-2 CD, released 1997

Contains the Hepcat track "Can't Wait"

World, meet Hellcat Records. Hellcat stormed onto the scene with this 1997 compilation. Many of the tracks on it would appear on other Hellcat releases, but the Hepcat song is a version that only appeared here. This collection was a testament to how many bands Hellcat was able to have in its corner by the time its first few albums hit the market. Of course, when you are bankrolled by Epitaph, that's not as hard as it would be otherwise, but it was still impressive. Released in the U.S. and in Europe - all versions are easy to find.

Ska Island

Island 314-524 392-2 CD, released 1997

Island ISLANDCD 3, released 1997 (UK)

Island PHCR-1856 CD, released 1997 (Japan)

Contains the Fishbone track "Crazy Bald Heads" and the Hepcat track "Penny Reel"

This was on of my absolute favorite compilations from the third wave ska period. It was released in conjunction with the anniversary of Island Records. It features ska bands covering classic Island songs. Fishbone does "Crazy Bald Heads" by the Wailers. Solid. Honestly, most tracks on here are really good. Hepcat covers "Penny Reel" by Eric Morris. The Japanese version of this disc has several bonus tracks on it. There are additional exclusive songs from the Ska Flames, Determinations, and Dreamlets.

Hellcat 0420-2 CD (Europe)

Epitaph ESCA 8082 CD (Japan)

Contains the Hepcat track "Riding the Region"

Give 'Em the Boot II is a solid follow up to the first in the Hellcat compilation series. It contains the Hepcat song "Riding the Region," which is a different version of the song "Region" from the Push 'N Shove album. Released in the U.S., Europe, and Japan. All versions are easy to find and inexpensive. The Japanese CD had a bonus track ("X-Ray Style" by Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros).
