The Gutter Twins

Saturnalia

Sub Pop SP761 2xLP / SPCD 761 CD, released March 2008 (U.S.)

Greg Dulli and Mark Lanegan, as a pair, could only have gone two ways: inseparability or utter catastrophe. Both have had penchants for hard drugs and dependency during their careers. One could easily imagine a joint effort between the two ending in disaster. It went the other way. I would swear that these were inching towards codependency for a while there. This, however, has not manifested in the music.

Saturnalia is a solid first effort. However, it sounds much less like an integration of Dulli's and Lanegan's styles than half a Dulli album and half a Lanegan album. Not that there's anything wrong with that. It is what it is. It's fitting that the two returned to Sub Pop after so many years. Double LP on black vinyl and getting a lot more expensive.
