The Afghan Whigs
Unbreakable (A Retrospective 1990-2006)
Rhino R2 73186 CD, released 2007 (U.S.)
Elektra 8122-73186-2 CD, released 2007 (UK)
For the most part, Unbreakable is an anthology. However, it does contain two newly-recorded tracks, "I'm a Solider" and "Magazine." I don't love either of these tracks, but it was great to hear new Whigs material. What was very interesting was that they remastered all of the tracks included on this disc. It was not particularly noticeable for the major label tracks, but it was amazing to hear the Sub Pop-era tracks redone. The difference is incredible on "Retarded," "Turn on the Water," "Come See About Me," and "Let Me Lie to You." It was also good to get a version of the song, "Gentlemen," that starts cleanly, minus the tail end of "If I Were Going."
