A Record Collector's Guide

Sub Pop Singles Club Version 2

The second run of the Singles Club had thick-stock paper sleeves. They spared no expense. Sub Pop resurrected the attached perforated Singles Club subscription forms for a good portion of this run, only discontinuing it when they knew they were bringing the project to an end. When I originally assembled this page, I had fairly poor-quality images. STOUTR was a tremendous help with this batch, providing a large portion of the scans on this page. All of the test pressings I have seen from this batch have looked the same: black vinyl, small holes, generic yellow Erika Records test pressing labels. Like this:

Team Dresch - It's a Conversation b/w Longstocking - Never Nowhere

Sub Pop SP439 7", released August 1998 (U.S.)

Sub Pop Singles Club V2 #5

1,300 copies, all on clear orange vinyl. Very good Team Dresch song here. It made me happy that Team Dresch and Sub Pop could put something together. The value held steady over the better part of the two decades after it was released, but then dropped. I always figured it would appreciate, and it never really did. Some of these had separate loose inserts in addition to the attached ones. All were on orange vinyl, though there is some variation in the orange color form one to another - from a light orange to nearly (but not quite) red.

The color varied quite a bit...many are on brown, cola-colored vinyl. Some are on more of an orange-brown. Others go to a reddish-brown. The overall effect can be quite different. Sub Pop Singles Club V2 #33

1,300 copies on split red & white vinyl...aaaaaand suddenly Sub Pop mattered again. Thank you very much, John Peel. You know how it works...no matter how knowledgeable we like to think we are as collectors, at the end of the day, the UK drives the market. This record showed up with some regularity on John Peel's radio show, The White Stripes simultaneously gained popularity, and the record's value took off. Between 2001 and 2002, the value skyrocketed. I sold my first copy when I was unemployed in the summer of 2002 for over $150. The value leveled off around the $350 mark, and then came down a bit at the end of 2008 with the weakening of the global economy and the British Pound.

In 2011, Jack White re-pressed this single on his label, Third Man Records, on tri-color red/white/black vinyl. That further depressed the value of the Sub Pop single.

This record also began the very cool-looking trend of split vinyl colors (they did this earlier with the Love as Laughter single, but this really started the consistent half & half trend). This one was half red and half white. Looks great.

Limited to 1,300 copies, on both yellow marble and purple marble vinyl. I don't know how many of each were pressed, but they seemed to be sold with roughly the same frequency (if anything, the purple one is slightly less common). However...there is also another version that surfaced, on blue-purple marble vinyl. Word is that there were about 50 of these pressed and given to the band. Considering the scarcity, it is very surprising that the blue-purple one has not sold for more. I think it never really appeared on the market until after the popularity of the band had waned a bit.

Diggin' Holes b/w Baby's Clean Conscience

Sub Pop SP602 7", released March 2001 (U.S.)

Sub Pop Singles Club V2 BONUS

Limited to 1,300 copies, all on clear yellow vinyl. The swan song...a bonus Ugly Casanova single. While generally not my style, this one is pretty good. Another one that dropped a bit in value after being high for a number of years.
