V.O.R. LP 202, released 1998 (Germany)

The second Skavoovie & the Epitones album approached the first in quality. Fully worth your time, if only for the band's tribute to the absurdity of Aquaman. And that was many years before Entourage and the DC movie came out, making it even more delicious. V.O.R. released it on vinyl in Germany. In the U.S., it was only on CD.

Rebirth Skatalites

Released 1976 (UK)

OK, this one's a bit of a nightmare. The African Roots album was released under several names over 40+ years. It was recorded in the mid-'70s as a Lloyd Brevett solo album. A lot of the original Skatalites went into the studio and knocked out the recordings, though, and it kind of became a Skatalites album. It was released under several titles: The Skatalites, The Legendary Skatalites, Rebirth Skatalites, and African Roots. To complicate things further, there was a dub version of the album released as Herb Dub - Collie Dub, but I'm leaving that one alone here.

The earliest versions, those with the first three titles mentioned above, were all released around 1976. There were subtle differences among these versions, which reflect a broad range of scarcity and dramatically affect the market prices. I am not an expert on these, and will forego trying to value them. Instead, I will focus on the versions that carried the African Roots title.

The first appearance of a record with that title was 1978. It contained the same eight tracks as its predecessors. Same with the 1985 U.S. issue. In 1992, a CD version was released in Japan. This one started adding some tracks: two dub versions plus four other tracks. This became the baseline for the subsequent releases: first, in Germany, on Grover, as a LP and then CD. Then, as a Moon Ska CD. Every version titled African Roots had different artwork.

Grover reissued it again in 2016 on green vinyl (with a bonus CD version). This one was limited to 250 numbered copies.

Bad Manners comes to Moon Ska. Bad Manners seems to be a afterthought in many discussions of the 2Tone era (mainly because they were never on the 2Tone label, I think). This is criminal. They were every bit as important as the others. Plus, they were the only band of the time to really stick to their guns and not alter their sound to fit in more with the '80s mainstream. This disc was not their best work, but it's fun. It was released in Japan under the same title, but with different artwork. It was also released with a different title, Don't Knock the Baldhead!, in Germany and Spain. The artwork was different for those as well.

"Wait, that voice is coming out of a big, bald, white German guy?" Dr. Ring-Ding is fantastic. That's all there is to it. One of the most important ska personalities in Europe throughout the third wave. This was the inaugural Dr. Ring-Ding & the Senior Allstars album. Originally released in Germany. The Moon Ska CD followed a couple of years later, with different artwork. The only vinyl was the German version on Grover. Grover re-pressed this one in 2015 for the 20 year anniversary. It was limited to 250 copies and came in a poster sleeve along with a bonus CD of the album. It seems there was another Grover pressing at that points that did not come with the CD...not sure how many of those there were.

Nihon Ska Dansu: Land Of The Rising Ska

Moon Ska MR117 CD, released 1997 (U.S.)

Skaville Japan Vol. 1

Phalanx PXLP-010/PX-010 CD, released 1997 (Japan)

This compilation of Japanese ska (J-Ska) bands first came out as Skaville Japan Vol. 1, exclusively in Japan. The Moon Ska version came shortly therefater. There were a few differences between the two. The U.S. CD contained tracks from three bands that did not appear on the Japanese one: The Cokehead Hipsters, Young Punch, and Duck Missile. The Japanese CD contained a hidden track - a live version of "Alone in Summer Place" by The Drops (a great song, but a terrible recording of it). The LP came with a different Drops track - their version of "Shame and Scandal." This compilation really showed the world that there was something good going on in Japan's ska underworld. It was what got me involved in the whole thing.

Asbestos / Underground Communique UCR/ASB 079 LP, released 2013 (U.S.)

Megalith MEV 010 LP, released 2016 (U.S.)

This album became one of the most successful Toasters albums, mainly due to its timing...1997 was that brief, golden moment when you actually regularly heard third wave ska on the radio. This was a solid Toasters release. The Moon Ska version was only available on CD (there was also a promo CD), but the Grover version had vinyl as well (with somewhat different artwork). Grover released CDs with both versions of the artwork, for some reason. It also came out in Japan and Brazil on CD. I've read that there were two versions of the Brazil CD with different catalogue numbers. I'm going to assume this is true.

In 2013, as part of the 3rd Wave Ska Preservation Society Reissue Project, Asbestos and Underground Communique re-released this one on vinyl - it was a double album with a whole bunch of bonus tracks. 250 copies with the first disc on white vinyl and the second on black, and 250 more of the reverse - black A/B and white C/D. Megalith put out another vinyl edition in 2016 containing some other B-sides.

The Adjusters jumped to another level on this album. This one is really, really good. It was all anyone in the scene could talk about at the end of the summer of 1998. Their first album was also very good, but this one had some extra soul and depth to it. The vinyl came out in Germany on V.O.R., and it has gotten much tougher to track down. V.O.R. did another small run in 2014 (100 copies). It was basically indistinguishable from the original pressing - the labels on the re-press had an ever-so-slight yellowish tint, but you can really only tell the difference if you have an original and a re-press right next to each other.

Badfish Records BADfi DCD 011 2xCD, released 2013 (UK)

Laurel Aitken's first studio collaboration with the Skatalites since their classic 1963 release. I wanted this disc to be perfect. It is good. I think my hopes were set too high. Initially, it was only released on Moon Ska in the States. A few years later, A Moon Ska Europe version came out with different artwork, an additional track, "Confucious". and a slightly different title: The Skatalites vs. Laurel Aitken - Clash of the Ska Titans CD. There were apparently two versions of this CD, one of which came in a digipak. It was then redone as a double CD in 2013 by Badfish. The second disc was live material that had previously been released as the "Guns of Navarone" CD. It was recorded on the 1996 Ska Splash tour, but is definitely not the same set that was on the Skatalites and Friends "Ska Splash" double CD that once came out on Moon Ska Europe. Got it? Cool.

The only vinyl version was released by Black Butcher Classics at the 20 year anniversary mark in 2019. It was on black vinyl and is easy to procure for the moment.

Live in London

Moon Ska MR143 CD, released 1998 (U.S.)

Moon Ska Europe MOON CD 042, released 1999/2005 (UK)

This was a great live Toasters performance that featured a guest appearance from Dr. Ring-Ding. This one is getting harder to find (the UK one is more common). CD only.

Live and Learn

Moon Ska MR151 CD, released 2000 (U.S.)

This was it...the Moon Ska swan song. I think an album by The Bluebeats was an acceptable way to go out. CD only.

Maximum Perversion

Moon Ska MR555 CD, released 1997 (U.S.)

Jump Up! MEPH667 LP, released 2017 (U.S.)

Jump Up! MEPH667 LP / JUMPTAPE667 Cassette, released 2018 (U.S.)

The second Mephiskapheles album...they chose MR555 for the catalogue number for this one. It didn't fit into the numbering scheme the way their previous album did, but I guess since the first album was MR666, it made...sense? If there had been a number reserved for it in the standard numbering scheme, it would have been either MR-116 or MR-121 (based entirely on release dates). It only came out on CD for its initial run. In 2017, Jump Up! gave it its first vinyl release. It came out on blood red marble vinyl. There was a second press on straight red vinyl in 2018 (limited to 200 copies). This accompanied a cassette version (limited to 150).
