A Record Collector's Guide

SP90 Smashing Pumpkins

Tristessa b/w La Dolly Vita

Sub Pop SP90 7", released December 1990 (U.S.)

Sub Pop SP10/137 12", released 1990 (Germany)

The only Sub Pop release by Smashing Pumpkins. All had foldover paper sleeves with Singles Club forms attached. There were a lot of these pressed - I have read 4500 on pink marble vinyl and 3000 on black vinyl. Or so I had been led to believe. Sub Pop says there were 2500 pink ones. I find this surprising, because there have been so many of these consistently on the market. The black ones have always seemed more scarce. The market actually used to reflect this, but it shifted over time because, well, you know, people love colored vinyl.

Oh yes, and then there's the gray one. Estimates vary, but there are probably between 100 and 200 of these in existence. It's expensive. In 2007, one of these sold for about $300. In early 2008, it went up to the $500-600 range, but it has come back down to $350 territory. Rumors circulated saying that the gray ones were the result of the plates not being cleaned between the pink and black pressings. Nope. There is no pink in those gray copies. They just simply pressed some gray ones. If this were from overlap, then you'd end up with far fewer than 200, and they would look purple, like the Rollins Band single. The test pressing for this record is on red vinyl, and when it sells, it is very, very expensive.
