Skarmageddon 3: A New Beginning

Moon Ska MR101 2xCD, released 1997

This comp only had one or two real standout songs, but most of it is solid.  CD only.

Ripe

Moon Ska MR102 CD, released 1997

V.O.R. LP 202, released 1998 (Germany)

The second Skavoovie & the Epitones album was not quite as good as teh first, but it was close.  Fully worth your time, if only for the band's tribute to the absurdity of Aquaman.  V.O.R. released it on vinyl in Germany.  In the U.S., it was only on CD.

African Roots

Grover GRO-CD 009, released 1995

Moon Ska MR104 CD, released 1997

The African Roots album went through many iterations over the years.  In this form, it was released twice: first, in Germany, as a Grover CD.  Then, as a Moon Ska CD with different artwork.  It was originally put out as a Skatalites LP (but not with entirely the same track listing).

Eat at Joey's

Moon Ska MR105 CD, released 1997

Easy Big Fella wasn't a bad band.  I think my favorite song of theirs showed up on the Skanarchy 3 compilation (not on Moon Ska).  This album was only on CD.

Heavy Petting

Moon Ska MR107 CD, released 1997

Bad Manners comes to Moon Ska.  Bad Manners seems to be a afterthought in many discussions of the 2-Tone era (mainly because they were never on the 2-Tone label).  However, they were the only band of the time to really stick to their guns and not alter their sound to fit in more with the '80s mainstream.  This disc was not their best work, but it's fun.  CD only.

Moon Ska MR107 CD 6-8

No Dancing, Please!

Moon Ska MR108 CD, released 1997

I found this album moderately entertaining.  There are only one or two real standout tracks on here.  CD only.

What You Can Do, What You Can't

Moon Ska MR112 CD, released 1997

King Django has arguably been the most important single personality in New York ska since the demise of Moon Ska.  He was always active in the ska scene, usually in multiple bands.  Skinnerbox was the loudest of those bands - they were a lot of fun.  This disc was one of their best efforts.  Only available on CD.

Version Approximate value ($)
Moon Ska MR112 CD 10-12

Dandimite!

Pork Pie EFA 04618-2 CD, released 1995 (Germany)

Grover GRO-LP 004/GRO-CD 004, released 1995 (Germany)

Moon Ska MR113 CD, released 1997

"Wait, that voice is coming out of a big, bald, white German guy?" Dr. Ring-Ding is fantastic.  That's all there is to it.  One of the most important ska personalities in Europe throughout the third wave.  This was the inaugural Dr. Ring-Ding & the Senior Allstars album.  Originally released in Germany.  The Moon Ska CD followed a couple of years later.

Nihon Ska Dansu: Land Of The Rising Ska

Moon Ska MR117 CD, released 1997

Skaville Japan Vol. 1

Phalanx PXLP-010/PX-010 CD, released 1997 (Japan)

This compilation of Japanese ska (J-Ska) bands first came out as Skaville Japan Vol. 1, exclusively in Japan.  The Moon Ska version came shortly therefater.  There are a few differences between the two.  The U.S. CD contains tracks from three bands that do not appear on the Japanese one: the Cokehead Hipsters, Young Punch, and Duck Missile.  The Japanese CD contained a hidden track - a live version of "Alone in Summer Place" by the Drops (a great song, but a terrible recording of it.  The LP has a different Drops track - their version of "Shame and Scandal." This compilation showed the world that there was something good going on in Japan's ska underworld.

Don't Let The Bastards Grind You Down

Moon Ska MR123 CD, released 1997

Grover GRO-LP 020/GRO-CD 020, released 1997 (Germany)

This album became one of the most successful Toasters albums, mainly due to its timing...1997 was that brief, golden moment when you actually regularly heard third wave ska on the radio.  This is a solid Toasters release.  The Moon Ska version was only available on CD, but the Grover version had vinyl as well (with somewhat different artwork).  There's also a Moon Ska promo CD.

Before the Revolution

Moon Ska MR133 CD, released 1998

V.O.R. LP 210, released 2000 (Germany)

The Adjusters jumped to another level on this album.  This one is really, really good.  It was all anyone in the scene could talk about at the end of the summer of 1998.  Their first album was also very good, but this one had some extra soul and depth to it.  The vinyl came out in Germany on V.O.R.  The vinyl is getting much tougher to track down.  I hear they have no interest in re-pressing it.

Skappellation d'Origine Controlee: The Best of French Ska

Moon Ska MR134 CD, released 1998

Moon Ska MR151 CD, released 2000

This was it...the Moon Ska swan song.  I think an album by the Bluebeats was an acceptable way to go out.  CD only.

Maximum Perversion

Moon Ska MR555 CD, released 1997

I found the second Mephiskapheles album to be far less interesting than the first.  Actually, I found it unlistenable.  That's just my opinion, though.  You are free to have your own.  They chose MR-555 for the catalogue number for this one.  It didn't fit into the numbering scheme the way their previous album did.  If there had been a number reserved for it in the standard numbering, it would have been either MR-116 or MR-121 (based entirely on the release date).  It only came out on CD.
